Singapore’s First Hybrid-Electric Patrol Boat Delivered: MPA Guardian Powered by Praxis Automation

September 27, 2022

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has officially deployed its first hybrid-electric patrol vessel, the MPA Guardian, a 34.5-meter multi-role command and emergency response boat powered by Praxis Automation’s complete electric propulsion technology suite.

Built by Singapore-based Penguin Shipyard International and designed by BMT (UK), the vessel integrates propulsion and control systems engineered and supplied by Praxis Automation Far East. MPA Guardian received Bureau Veritas’ “Electric Hybrid” notation and is designed to carry out surveillance, firefighting, search-and-rescue, and fast-response missions in and around Singapore waters.

Praxis delivered the vessel’s entire automation ecosystem: dynamic positioning, vessel management, energy and power management, propulsion control, and fire alarm systems. Central to the system are Praxis’ DNV-certified “GreenBattery” liquid-cooled lithium-ion LFP batteries (6x 80kWh racks), providing up to 3 hours of zero-emission cruising in full-electric mode. The batteries can be recharged during operations using the propulsion motor as a shaft generator.

“When it comes to electrifying vessels, it’s more than just putting in a battery rack, drive unit and electric motor. The key is seamless control and system integration,” said Jerome Lin, Sales Director at Praxis Automation Far East. “We are proud to support this innovative project with our fully in-house developed and manufactured solution.”

James Tham, Managing Director of Penguin Shipyard, commented, “With MPA Guardian, Praxis has proven itself as a top-tier technology partner for bespoke and complex high-speed hybrid-electric vessels. Their commitment and execution were key to this project’s success.”

Designed with accommodation for up to 24 survivors and a purpose-built command wheelhouse, MPA Guardian is equipped to serve as a control hub during coordinated maritime operations—strengthening Singapore’s preparedness, sustainability, and marine security.
